Instagram’s Threads App Sees 79% Drop in Active Users on Android

In a surprising turn of events, Instagram’s new microblogging platform, Threads app, has experienced a dramatic decline of 79% in active users on its Android application over the course of the past month. According to data provided by the renowned analysis portal Similarweb, the platform recorded a notable drop from 49.3 million active users on July 7 to a mere 10.3 million on August 7.

Threads, introduced by Meta at the beginning of July this year, was aimed at providing users with an alternative platform to share their thoughts, opinions, and creative expressions through text-based posts, closely resembling its predecessor, Twitter. The application garnered swift attention, reaching a substantial milestone of 100 million global subscribers within a week of its launch, despite being limited in availability across certain regions, such as the European Union countries.

Nonetheless, despite its initial success, the recent data from Similarweb, as reported by The Verge, paints a concerning picture for Threads. The substantial drop in active Android users indicates a substantial setback for the platform, raising questions about its long-term viability.

The statistics reveal that Threads’ Android application boasted 49.3 million daily active users on July 7. However, the figures taken on August 7 reveal a staggering decline, with active users plummeting to a mere 10.3 million. This rapid decline has also extended to the average time users spend on the app, further highlighting the platform’s struggles. According to Similarweb’s data, the average daily usage time for active users has dwindled to a mere three minutes.

By comparison, during Threads’ launch phase, users globally were spending an average of around 14 minutes per day on the microblogging platform. This stark contrast underscores the considerable drop in user engagement within a short span of time.

It remains to be seen how Threads’ development team and Meta respond to these disconcerting statistics. While the initial excitement and surge in subscribers were promising, the recent decline in active users signals a challenging road ahead for the application. The company may need to reevaluate its strategy, features, and overall user experience to address the evident concerns and regain its lost user base.

As Threads faces its first major setback, industry experts are keeping a keen eye on its next steps, hoping to witness a turnaround that could solidify its position in the competitive social media landscape.
