PlayStation 5 Slim to Launch in November with Removable Disc Drive

In an exciting announcement made by Sony on Tuesday afternoon, the long-awaited PlayStation 5 Slim is finally set to become a reality. This updated version of the PS5 boasts a sleeker design, significant reductions in size and weight, and a removable disc drive. Gamers can anticipate its release next month in November, with options for both physical media and digital-only models, along with some notable improvements.

The new PS5 Slim is over 30% smaller than its 2020 predecessor, a much-welcomed change considering that one of the primary criticisms of the original model was its unwieldy size. This reduction in volume also resulted in a lighter console, now 18% to 24% lighter than the previous version.

Changes to the design are also evident. In contrast to the current PlayStation 5, which features two replaceable plates guarding the internal components, the new PS5 Slim boasts four detachable panels that contribute to its modern appearance. However, the characteristic curved design of the console remains, which may not appeal to all consumers.

Additionally, the new model is meant to be used horizontally only. This is due to the base included with the device, which supports this orientation. For those wishing to place the PS5 in a vertical position, a separate base can be purchased for $30.

As for the release date, Sony has not provided the exact date but has indicated that the consoles will be available in November in the United States and select other countries. The suggested price for the full version is $499.99, and the Digital Edition is priced at $449.99. There is no official word on whether Brazil will be a part of this initial release, as was the case with the 2020 PS5 launch, nor have the specific pricing details for Brazil been revealed.

A significant addition to the PlayStation 5 Slim is the removable disc drive, a feature that had been rumored for some time. The Digital Edition of the PS5 Slim allows users to purchase the disc drive separately for an $80 upgrade, offering the flexibility to play physical disc-based games in addition to digital titles. This makes the PS5 Slim Digital Edition a more cost-effective option for those seeking a more economical version of the console.

One noteworthy detail that may have gone unnoticed during the PS5 Slim announcement is that this updated console is not an additional option for consumers but rather the new standard version. Sony has clearly stated on its official website that the new version will be the only one available once the stocks of the 2020 PlayStation 5 are exhausted.

As the anticipation builds for the PlayStation 5 Slim’s release in November, gamers around the world can look forward to a more compact and versatile gaming experience with this latest addition to the Sony PlayStation family.
